Overview
Kozhikode (Calicut), on Kerala's Malabar coast, was the capital of the Zamorin rulers and a famous spice port. Vasco da Gama landed nearby at Kappad in 1498. The city is known for its beaches, its halwa and Malabar biryani, and in 2023 it was named India's first UNESCO City of Literature.
