Overview
Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, was the capital of British India until 1911 and the centre of the Bengal Renaissance. The Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge, College Street's book markets and the trams that still run through its streets reflect its long history.
Kolkata is India's cultural capital, celebrated for literature, cinema, music, football and Durga Puja, as well as sweets such as rosogolla and mishti doi.
Getting there & around
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Howrah and Sealdah stations and India's oldest metro system – including an underwater tunnel beneath the Hooghly – serve the city.
